Fire Retardant Plywood's & Doors
The latest stipulation in the National Building Code has necessitated the use of fire retardant doors in the high rise buildings. Slowly it is expected to find market in all types of buildings. The present practice of treating doors and plywood with hygroscopic chemicals has some problems. The surface of these products tends to absorb moisture when exposed to high humid weather and then paintability of these panels become very poor. To overcome this problem, Institute has developed a treatment composition for plywood. However, this has to be worked out for flush door where thick solid wood door frame has to be treated in addition to veneers. To meet the international standards the chemical treatment alone will not solve the problem, therefore there is a need to develop a new concept in the construction of the doors. Many types of barrier and insulation materials are available in market and the same are being used in the construction of the door assembly. At IPIRTI research is being carried out to develop fire retardant flush doors and fire chequred doors either by chemical treatment or by concept of constructions. The doors developed would be studied for the stability, integrity and insulation as per BS: 476-part 22.
