1. Acoustic pulse tester
With the growing interest in noise-control issues and increasing importance of sound quality as an important aspect of product design and other engineering applications, acoustic material testing is quickly gaining in significance. The facilities have been established at IPIRTI for testing acoustic properties such as sound absorption coefficient, acoustic impendence and admittance, and transmission loss coefficient of wood and wood based panel products and panels made from other lignocellulosics.
2. Shear/Scratch tester
Scratch tester is specialized equipment used to measure the relative resistance or susceptibility of a material surface to shearing, gouging, scratching, scraping, engraving and other physical damage not classified as ordinary wear.
3. Digital Multi gloss meter
The facilities have been established at IPIRTI for testing glossiness of surfaces suitable for laminates, overlays and films used by panel and other industries and is ideally suited for measuring flat, non-textured surfaces.
Gloss measurement is essential where an aesthetic appearance of the coating/finish is required and it is measured at an angle of 20o, 60o or 85o.
4. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
NDT of wood and wood products is yet to become popular in India. Proper assessment of material strength non-destructively helps in better utilization of scarce materials. Other advantages of NDT are (i) it facilitates research laboratories for gathering material properties of large number of test specimens within a short period of time, (ii) it can be used as a quality control tool in any manufacturing process to check each and every product IPIRTI established NDT facilities for wood and wood based panels both for research and training purposes.
5. VPT apparatus
VPT apparatus test method is designed and developed by IPIRTI along with test method alternate to water resistance test prescribed for higher grades of plywood and block-board. The results of 72 hours boiling test is comparable to 6 hours steaming by VPT.
6. Computer controlled Thermal conductivity apparatus
The facilities have been established at IPIRTI for testing thermal conductivity of panel products made from wood and other lignocellulosics.
Thermal conductivity, k, is the intensive property of a material that indicates its ability to conduct heat. Heat transfer by conduction involves transfer of energy within a material without any motion of the material as a whole.
7. Smoke Density Apparatus
Facilities have been established at IPIRTI for measuring relative amounts (Density) of smoke produced by the burning (combustion) or decomposition of wood and panel products from wood and other lignocellulosics under controlled and standardized conditions.
